Elders

Elders

Elders experience physical, psychological and social changes brought about by ageing. To face these challenges, elders should know the way to look after bodily and mental health for enjoying joyful ageing lives.

Maintaining mental well-being is not difficult. Simply add “Sharing”, “Mind” and “Enjoyment” elements into your life to make it healthier, happier and more meaningful.

Act now! Let “Sharing”, “Mind” and “Enjoyment” bring you the joy. Also submit “My Pledge” and share your joy with others anytime and anywhere you like.

Sharing

  1. Stay in touch with others
Regularly meet up your friends and family in person, or keep in touch with them through the phone or internet.

  2. Stay connected with the society
Get yourself involved in the local community. For example, visiting a library or community centre nearby and keeping an eye on current issues.

  3. Talk to someone
Do not keep your feelings to yourself. Share both your joy and sadness with your family members, friends or your trusted ones. Also share your valuable experience, wisdom and expertise with others.

  4. Help others
You will feel happy by helping others. Participate in volunteer work and offer help to your neighbours. For example, making small purchases for neighbours and saying please and thank you to others.

  5. Make new friends
Make new friends through different channels or social activities, such as volunteer work, religious activities and community or elderly centre activities.

Mind

  1. Reinterpret situations in a rational and positive way
Infuse positive thinking or values to comprehend different situations. Think positively even amid negative events. For example you may consider ageing as a process of gaining wisdom, knowledge and experience.

  2. Be humorous and keep laughing
Laugh often. Use your sense of humor to counteract your negative emotions. This can cheer you up.

  3. Feel grateful
Always think about the good things in your life. Feel grateful for what you already have. Write down three good things at the end of every day.

  4. Recall your positive memories
Regularly recall happy past events in your life. For example, you may look for your childhood photos, an old song or a memento that has a special meaning. This will help recall your happy old times.

  5. Believe in yourself
Be confident about your abilities instead of underestimating them. Think about the things you have achieved, tough times you have gone through, nice things you have done for others, as well as experiences and wisdom you have gained. Write all these positive things down and believe in yourself.

Enjoyment

  1. Cultivate hobbies and engage in intellectual activities
Engage in enjoyable leisure activities and cultivate them as hobbies. For example, listening to and singing Chinese opera, painting, and playing a musical instrument. Intellectual leisure activities also keep your brain smart. For example, reading books and newspapers, playing chess and knitting.

  2. Adequate physical activities
Appropriate physical activities are good for your physical and mental health. Integrate physical activity into your daily life according to your own health conditions. For example, walking, hiking and tai chi. Stretching and muscle-strengthening exercises can also improve physical health and fitness. You may consult health care professionals to identify which physical activities suit you most.

  3. Keep yourself active
Setting yourself small goals, making day plans, or arranging activities for weeks ahead can all give you a sense of achievement and motivation. For example, reading a chapter of a book, going for a walk, tidying up your room, making a phone call to a friend, and arranging activities for your family gathering.

  4. Keep learning
Learning and mastering new skills can bring you a sense of achievement and improve your mental health. For example, learning calligraphy, flower arrangement and computer operation.

  5. Take notice of your surroundings
Keep your curiosity fresh and pay attention to your surroundings. For example, exploring the nature to savour its beauty. You may then discover something new that interests you.
